Top 50 songs of 2017 countdown (#40-#36)

36.) Happy Birthday, Johnny by St. Vincent
(The best birthday song of 2017? Simple yet personal. A hummable tune)

37.) Friend Zone by Thundercat
(Usually not a fan of modern computerized instrumentals but this track has a smooth production and holds up to many listens. The lyrics are about being stuck in the friend zone)

38.) Pull The Sun by Danzig
(Past their late 80s/early 90s prime. The closer on 2017’s Black Laden Crown is  a reminder of their talent)

39.)  Baby Luv by Nilüfer Yanya
(She’s a young, up-and-coming Londoner with an unusual vocal. Last June, The Guardian named her one to watch.  A catchy melody and the song has emotional weight)

40.) The Locomotive by King Krule
(I find his new material works better in the context of the album experience. The Locomotive gives you a taste of the jazzy melancholy of 2017’s The Ooz. Not an easy listen. You are inside his head, and he’s not in a happy place, on his own, waiting for a train, and feeling sorry for himself. The song opens with my favorite lyric on the album: “I’m not in the mood, but I gotta move”)
